In This Heat? Energy Saving Tips

Folks...it is HOT already...104 yesterday where I live and should be close to that today. Now...I am incredibly thankful...as LAST year there was an entire string of 100 degree days already this time and we are no where near that hot this year...yet! Since I am in the Energy biz, I have some Energy Saving Tips to deliver at my networking luncheon today, but started thinking about applying those tips to running a business in the Summer of 2012.

Now...if you choose to believe all doom and gloom in the marketplace, that is obviously your choice. I say you are robbing yourself of opportunities because they generally do not knock (or you will not notice them) when negativity is dragging you downward. People are spending money every day...lots of businesses are flourishing and new ones beginning! If you truly want some of that business to come to you...then let's look at some Energy Savings Tips to help you.

1. Install a programmable thermostat to lower utility bills and manage your system efficiently.
In your business, first thing every Monday morning....List your Top 5 Projects for the Week, making sure they are in line with your specific goals for the month.

2. Air dry dishes instead of using dishwasher's dry cycle.
In your business, make the most of every networking opportunity. Schedule one on ones, follow up, and truly listen for opportunities to connect.

3. Plug home electronics, TVs and DVD players, into power strips, turning them off when they are not in use...thereby saving power.
In your business, follow up with every contact made either with an email or better yet, a personal note thanking them for their time.

4. Lower the thermostat on your water heater to 120 degrees.
In your business, concentrate on time blocking....1 hour of computer time...1 hour of personal development, 1 hour of follow-ups, etc. You will get more done every day this way.

5. Wash only FULL loads of dishes or clothes and try to do this at night or early morning to avoid creating more heat in your home during the peak heat hours.
In your business, plan on posting Social Media when they peak hours of viewing are: early morning and in the evening.

6. Drive sensibly; aggressive driving such as speeding, tailgating, rapid acceleration and braking wastes fuel.
Choose to listen to Self Improvement CDs while driving. Not only will it calm you...but your actually might learn valuable information while your are stuck in traffic.

Here's to your success: Raising a glass of Ice Water to stay hydrated,

Confessions of a Tired Caterer; Burned to a Crisp

Recently, after 8 years of owning my own catering business, Tea 'n Mystery, I announced I was retiring on June 3. I am quite happy with my decision, but it has surprised so many people.....I am surprised. Of course, the ones that were the most surprised never actually worked alongside me...so they never actually experienced all the highs and lows of this business. Truly, I can say to you....unless you are in the ditch digging business...you have probably never worked that hard physically in your life! For a taste of what my days were like....read on...and maybe you will see why at 57, I am retiring and working my Plan B. Typical Day 1 of job: Lists, lists, and more lists. Products needed, serving supplies to retrieve from storage, paper products needed, decorations needed, etc...and then the shopping begins. 1. Restaurant supply for large quantity items 2. Costco for smaller quantities or certain cheeses, fruits, eggs, heavy cream, paper products 3. Party City for decor and or pap...

Making A Difference

Doesn't everyone want to feel like they are making a difference in this world? I know I do! I have met some powerful people this past week who are DEFINITELY making a difference in the world by mentoring, helping the disabled, helping non-profits raise much needed funds, helping restore local treasures, and helping heal broken relationships. What are YOU doing to  make a difference? Need a place to plug in? There is a Senior Job and Volunteer Fair coming up on Tuesday, September 12 in Frisco from 10-3. Maybe you attend and find a place that speaks to you so that you can start volunteering. Maybe your company is looking for some new talent and could look to hire active adult seniors with tons of life experience. This wonderful event is being held at the Frisco Senior Center and is sponsored by The Senior Services Alliance of Frisco, a group of the Frisco Chamber of Commerce. Check this out at www.frisocchamberofcommerce.com Our firm is also sponsoring the Silent Auction Tent a...

Memorial Day Recipe: Red, White and Blueberry Pie

When I think of Memorial Day weekend...I immediately think of sun, water (usually the pools open this weekend), BBQs, and Flags. This is a weekend to enjoy with family and friends, but to remember those who have gone before us as well. Here in the United States, we pause to remember those who gave their lives in service to our country on Memorial Day. I hear "Taps" playing in my head and see images of white crosses lining Arlington National Cemetary. This is a time of remembrance and to count our blessings as well. Hopefully, wherever you are, you have this tradition in one way or another. I have been very blessed in my life and as such...enjoy giving back now...whether in my own community, to disaster victims, to help others get back on their feet, and to raise funds for needed improvements to landmarks, etc. I especially enjoy helping raise funds for programs that offer a hand up, not a hand out to change people's lives forever. All that being said...when you are th...
